Odoo Taxjar Connector FAQs

These frequently asked questions cover the most common setup, daily use and troubleshooting topics for the Odoo Taxjar Connector. For help options, see Odoo Taxjar Connector Support Policy.

Getting Started

The connector works with Odoo Enterprise, Odoo Community and Odoo.sh.

When you create a quotation or an invoice, the connector gets the correct US sales tax from TaxJar and applies it. The tax depends on where you ship from and where your customer is. When you validate an invoice, the connector sends it to TaxJar, so your tax reports and return filing are ready.

You only need your TaxJar API token. Copy it from your TaxJar dashboard and paste it into the API Token field of your TaxJar account in Odoo.

No. A TaxJar account only works with a company whose country is the United States. If the company country is different, the app shows “Please check your company country!”.

Yes. The TaxJar account has an Environment setting. Set it to production only when your credentials are certified for production.

Setup

  1. Go to Invoicing ‣ Configuration ‣ Taxjar ‣ TaxJar Account and create a new account.

  2. Paste your token in the API Token field.

  3. Click Confirm.

Confirming tests the connection and activates the account. Your states with nexus are imported and shown on the Your States with Nexus tab.

Open your TaxJar account and click Sync Category. The categories appear in Invoicing ‣ Configuration ‣ Taxjar ‣ TaxJar Category, each with its Tax Code and Description.

Set the TaxJar Category field on a product. To cover many products at once, set the Taxjar Category field on a product category instead.

Attach the TaxJar account to a fiscal position with the TaxJar Account field. From then on, orders that use this fiscal position get TaxJar taxes.

Open your TaxJar account and click Sync State. To cover all US states instead, check Export All US State Transactions?. Then the app calculates taxes for quotations and invoices and exports all USA customer invoices to TaxJar.

You choose. On the TaxJar account, set Refresh Rate Interval and Interval Unit. The unit can be Minutes, Hours, Days, Weeks or Months.

Yes. Check Apply Tax Breakdown on the TaxJar account. The tax is then split into lines, such as city, state and county taxes. Leave it unchecked to show one combined tax.

Go to Invoicing ‣ Configuration ‣ Taxjar ‣ Tax Format and create a format. On the Lines tab, add lines with a Sequence, a Type, and an optional Prefix and Suffix. The Type can be Hardcoded, State Name, State Code, Country Name, Country Code, City, County, ZIP Code, Percentage or Add a space.

Select a contact with an address in Address to see a proper Preview. Click Sync County to fetch the county from TaxJar. Use Tax Group to set the default tax group for new taxes.

Then pick your formats on the TaxJar account: Tax Format for the general pattern, and City, County, Country and Special for each tax level.

On the TaxJar account, set Default Invoice Tax Account and Default Credit Note Tax Account. The connector uses them when it creates a new tax.

Check Transaction Sync? on the TaxJar account. Invoices and refunds are then exported from Odoo to TaxJar automatically.

Select users in Activity Assigned To on the TaxJar account. If an error occurs at export time, an activity is created and assigned to them.

Check Allow Address Validation with TaxJar on your company. You can then validate customer addresses from the contact form.

Daily Use

No. The right sales tax appears on quotations and invoices when you add a product. Make sure your warehouse and customer addresses are complete, because tax depends on both.

With Transaction Sync? checked, a validated invoice or refund is sent to TaxJar. If you cancel it, it is removed from TaxJar. The Is sync with TaxJar field on the invoice shows whether it is synced.

  1. Open your TaxJar account and click Backfill Transactions.

  2. Set the From Date and To Date.

  3. Click Export.

Set the TaxJar Exempt Type on the customer. It is used when the app calculates order taxes and uploads invoices to TaxJar for this customer. Click Apply to Child Contacts to copy it to the customer’s child contacts.

A customer and their delivery address can have different exemption settings. Then the Is Exemption Mismatch field is set on the sales order or invoice. Click Correct Exempt Type on the sales order, or Correct Exemption Type on the invoice, to fix it.

  1. Open the contact and click Validate(TaxJar).

  2. Compare the current address with the Taxjar Verified Addresses.

  3. Click Save to use the verified address, or Cancel to keep yours.

Go to Invoicing ‣ Configuration ‣ Taxjar ‣ TaxJar Rates. Each rate shows the address details, the City Tax Rate(%), State Tax Rate(%), County Tax Rate(%) and Special Tax Rate(%), and the Last Sync Date.

For some product categories, only part of the line is taxable. TaxJar sends this value based on the customer address and the TaxJar product category. It appears in Taxable Amount(TaxJar) when it is less than the subtotal.

Troubleshooting

The API Token on your TaxJar account is empty or not accepted by TaxJar. Copy the token again from your TaxJar dashboard, paste it into API Token, and click Confirm.

TaxJar accounts and TaxJar fiscal positions only work when the company’s country is the United States. Set the company country to the United States and try again.

Make sure a TaxJar account exists and that you clicked Confirm on it. Also check that it is set in the TaxJar Account field of the fiscal position.

One or more tax formats are missing. Open your TaxJar account and set Tax Format, plus the City, County, Country and Special formats.

A tax name format can have only one line with the Percentage type. Remove the extra lines.

Sync County needs an address with a ZIP code. Select a contact with a ZIP code in Address and try again.

The TaxJar account is still set on the fiscal positions named in the message. Remove it from the TaxJar Account field on those fiscal positions first.

In the backfill wizard, the From Date must be on or before the To Date. Fix the dates and click Export again.

Go to Invoicing ‣ Configuration ‣ Taxjar ‣ Logs. Each log shows the URL, Method, Request Data and Response, so you can see what was sent and what TaxJar answered.
